A father-son archery elk hunting duo has a real life experience they will always cherish. Neither Wayne nor Eric Schmautz had ever taken an elk with their bows so, after obtaining a couple of Montana tags, they left their North Dakota homes and made the trek west.
Eric called in a bull and Wayne shot it. They waited before tracking it when they heard another bugle. As they worked their way down a ridge, Eric saw the bull, drew back an arrow and also connected.
Wayne later paced off the distance between the two downed animals and it was only 160 yards.
“It’s a father-son deal, first archery elk for both of us together, and for me to call his bull in, and then him to be there for me when I shot my bull,” Eric Schmautz told the Bismarck Tribune. “The whole experience, I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
