Looking to get a better handle on how elk calves are faring in west-central Colorado, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) biologists kicked off a six-year study near Aspen. They captured 24 cow elk and implanted them with a transmitter that will hit the ground when their calves do the same this spring.
The goal is to get more of a hands-on look at calf recruitment.
“That’s one of the real questions we’re asking with this study,” Mike Yamashita, acting CPW wildlife manager, told the Post Independent.
Area elk herds experienced low calf-to-cow ratios over the last decade.
