The state of Montana will join Idaho, Wyoming and the federal government in appealing a ruling that removed Yellowstone-area grizzly bears from state management.
“Grizzly bear recovery and conservation is an amazing success story that’s taken decades of hard work and dedication. The science is clear that grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are recovered,” Martha Williams, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks director, told the Hungry Horse News.
“With grizzly bear recovery goals met in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the safeguards in place to ensure healthy populations will persist, it’s time to hand over management to the states,” said Montana Gov. Steve Bullock.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation filed a joint notice of appeal meaning, the two groups can decide at a later date whether to formally appeal the decision.
RMEF agrees with professional wildlife managers that the grizzly population met recovery goals, adapted to changes in its habitat and that state wildlife agencies will ensure the continued conservation of the species which includes a safety net.
